It was a short illness and has taken us all by surprise. As I gather my thoughts on this man, I realize the history that we shared was over 35 years and was steadfast and deep. I want to honour him. Robert Laidlaw was a godly man. He walked with God daily and taught his family to love, honour and worship God. He was faithful, strong, dependable, caring, and funny always filled with love for his family and those around him. Looking back, I realized today one of the reasons I loved him so, was because he knew my Dad before my Dad was sick with Alzheimer’s. They were good friends, they loved each other, respected each other and helped each other all the time. Dad helped Dad Laidlaw dig out a basement at his house. Dad Laidlaw would drive to Michigan with my Dad in snowstorms to help my Grandma. I remember one time, they took the Laidlaw’s van and it got stuck in the deep snow on the 402 to Sarnia and that didn’t stop them, they had shovels to dig out with! As a young teen one of my best memories of Dad Laidlaw was going with a group of kids from Brantford to Cambridge to Churchill Park for a big toboggan party. Dad Laidlaw drove his van fast and hard along Cheese Factory Road and if you know that road you know about the hills… up and down and up and down… and in the winter… years back the snow drifts were immense. He hit a snow drift so hard, he knocked the side mirror off the van… and I remember being impressed that he didn’t stop and fret, but he laughed and kept going! He loved his wife, his four children, their spouses and grandchildren with all his heart. His deepest desire for his family was for them to know God, to love Him with all their heart and soul. He never cared for material possessions, fame and fortune were never his goal. His goal was to walk humbly with his Saviour whom he loved deeply and served quietly. Looking back over the years, any renovation, any move, and any big job to do, Dad Laidlaw was always there, helping, supporting giving advice. He was always jumping in to help. That was Dad. Having the privilege of having this man for my father in law is one of life’s gifts that I will always be so very thankful for. Dad Laidlaw is greatly missed. I can’t imagine our family gatherings without him quite honestly…. But I know that Dad is in heaven, with the God he loved and served. Dad has been promoted to Heaven, to be with the Lord he loved so deeply and served his entire life. Tuesday afternoon, Dad heard “well done faithful servant, well done”. May his children and grandchildren continue to walk with God in the legacy that Dad Laidlaw has left.
